Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and innovation, students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, in doing this they acquire a broad range of subject knowledge. Students learn how to take risks, becoming independent, resourceful, resilient, innovative and enterprising. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

Key Stage 3 Overview

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, students are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in process of designing and making.  The lessons are largely practical and skill building. Students will gain great satisfaction from making creative products, using a range of materials and equipment.  Students also gain an awareness of moral, ethical, sustainable and social issues through a variety of challenging design briefs.

They will be taught:

  •          How to research and analyse existing Food, Textiles and Resistant Materials products.
  •          To understand the characteristics of different materials.
  •       How to create 3 dimensional designs, including the use of Isometric projection and perspective.
  •        How to present their design ideas using a range of techniques, and gain competence in communicating design thinking.
  •         How to create models and mock-ups of their designs.
  •      How to set up and safely use equipment.
  •       Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health
  •       Cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet
  •        Become competent in a range of cooking techniques (for example, selecting and preparing ingredients; using utensils and electrical equipment; applying heat in different ways; using awareness of taste, texture and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients; adapting and using their own recipes).
  •        Understand the source, seasonality and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients.           
  •         How to create a repeat pattern using CAD
  •         How to produce templates
  •          How to create and print with a laser cut stencil
  •          How to create 3 dimensional forms in textiles
  •          How to plan a sequence of making activities
  •         How to apply quality control measures to their work
  •         How to use surface pattern and texture to enhance their products, including engraving and polishing, fabric painting, printing and dying.

Our Staff

To help deliver our courses the department is lucky to have specialist teachers for each area:

Cella Riley (Head of KS4 Design Technology): Food Technology and Product Design

Rhiannon Bird: (Head of KS3 Design Technology): Textiles Technology and Product Design.

Lauren Kettle: Resistant Materials.

The department is also well supported by our two technicians Gail Hayward and Graham Cowell.

DT has 3 specialist classrooms and our own computer suite. We also have a CAD/CAM room in the Resistant Materials area.
